Chemistry

Qualitative Analysis: Organic

Using bromine water and acidified potassium manganate(VII) to distinguish saturated from unsaturated hydrocarbons.

STATUS

This lab is in development.

When complete, this will be a guided, step-by-step 3D simulation of the real chemistry practical. For now, you can read exactly what the simulation will cover below.

What you’ll do

The guided simulation will walk you through these steps in order.

  1. 01Label two test tubes A and B. Add a few drops of the test hydrocarbon to each.
  2. 02To tube A, add bromine water (orange-brown) dropwise; observe whether the colour is retained or decolorised.
  3. 03To tube B, add acidified potassium manganate(VII) solution (purple) dropwise; observe colour change.
  4. 04Record observations: decolorisation of bromine water and/or KMnO₄ indicates the presence of a C=C double bond (unsaturated).
  5. 05Repeat with a known saturated compound as a control and a known unsaturated compound as a positive reference.
  6. 06Write your conclusion, distinguishing the two samples based on the combined test results.
