Food Tests

Using Benedict's, Iodine and Biuret reagents to test for reducing sugars, starch and proteins.

STATUS

This lab is in development.

When complete, this will be a guided, step-by-step 3D simulation of the real biology practical. For now, you can read exactly what the simulation will cover below.

What you’ll do

The guided simulation will walk you through these steps in order.

  1. 01Prepare four test tubes, each containing a small sample of the food substance dissolved or suspended in water.
  2. 02Benedict's test (reducing sugars): Add 2 cm³ of Benedict's solution; heat in a water bath for 2–3 minutes; a brick-red precipitate is a positive result.
  3. 03Iodine test (starch): Add 2 drops of iodine solution; a blue-black colour is a positive result.
  4. 04Biuret test (proteins): Add 2 cm³ of sodium hydroxide solution, then add copper sulphate solution drop by drop; a purple/violet colour is a positive result.
  5. 05Record all observations and inferences in a results table: food tested, reagent, observation, conclusion.
  6. 06Compare results with positive and negative controls for each test.
