Dichotomous Keys & Specimen Observation
Examining structural adaptations of leaves and flowers to identify them using a key.
STATUS
This lab is in development.
When complete, this will be a guided, step-by-step 3D simulation of the real biology practical. For now, you can read exactly what the simulation will cover below.
What you’ll do
The guided simulation will walk you through these steps in order.
- 01Collect or examine provided specimens of leaves and/or flowers; handle them carefully and lay them flat.
- 02Begin with the first couplet in the dichotomous key; read both statements and decide which applies to your specimen.
- 03Follow the direction given (proceed to a numbered couplet or arrive at a name) and continue through the key.
- 04Record each couplet number and choice made as you work through the key, so your reasoning can be checked.
- 05When you reach an identification, write down the name of the organism and note the key features that led to it.
- 06Sketch the specimen, labelling at least three structural adaptations (e.g. parallel venation, waxy cuticle, thorn).
- 07Repeat the identification independently starting from couplet 1 to verify your result.
